Kolkata| Senior CPIM leader and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Buddhadev Bhattacharya, passed away today in Kolkata due to old age. He was 80 years old.

Buddhadev Bhattacharya, a stalwart of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal for 11 consecutive years from 2000 to 2011 during the 34-year Left Front rule in the state. His tenure is marked by significant political and social changes, including efforts to industrialize the state and improve its economic landscape.

Bhattacharya took over the reins as Chief Minister from Jyoti Basu in 2000, continuing the legacy of the Left Front’s long-standing governance. His leadership was characterized by attempts to bring investment and development to West Bengal, often facing stiff opposition and challenges.

In the 2011 elections, Bhattacharya and the Left Front were defeated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), marking the end of an era for CPIM’s dominance in the state. Following this electoral loss, he stepped down from the CPIM Politburo and Central Committee in 2015, gradually retreating from active politics.

After retiring from active political life, Bhattacharya rarely made public appearances, dedicating his time to personal pursuits and remaining a respected figure within the CPIM. His last public participation was in a CPIM rally in 2019, where he continued to advocate for the party’s principles and vision.

In 2018, Bhattacharya relinquished his membership of the state secretariat, signaling the end of his formal involvement in party activities. Despite his withdrawal from the political spotlight, his influence and contributions to West Bengal’s political landscape remain significant.

Bhattacharya’s passing marks the end of an important chapter in West Bengal’s political history. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication to the Communist movement and his vision for a progressive and industrialized West Bengal.

The CPIM and political leaders across the spectrum have expressed their condolences, remembering Bhattacharya’s contributions and leadership. His passing is a significant loss for the party and the state.

Funeral arrangements and memorial services are yet to be announced. Bhattacharya is survived by his family, who have requested privacy during this time of mourning.
