Wayanad: In the wake of devastating landslides that have wreaked havoc in the region, Harrisons Malayalam Limited has stepped forward with substantial assistance for those affected, launching a relief initiative named ‘Kaithangu’ (Helping Hand). The company, known for its longstanding commitment to the community, had earlier allocated 64 cents of land in Puthumala for the burial of unidentified victims of the disaster.

Under the ‘Kaithangu’ initiative, Harrisons Malayalam Limited has initiated several relief efforts. The company has already provided an immediate relief of ₹1 lakh each to the families of deceased workers, with additional financial support planned based on the workers’ length of service. To address the urgent need for housing, the company has arranged accommodation for 127 families who lost their homes in the landslides. These families have been relocated to Arapetta, Chundel, and Achur, where the company is also facilitating employment opportunities in nearby estates.

In addition to housing and financial aid, the company has committed to providing free medical treatment for the next three years to the families of the deceased. The landslide disaster at Sentinel Rock Estate in Mundakkai claimed the lives of 41 workers, leaving 48 of their family members grieving.

Munnar Workers Contribute ₹70 Lakh to Relief Efforts

In a show of solidarity, tea plantation workers from Munnar have pledged ₹70 lakh to support those affected by the landslides in Mundakkai and Chooralmala, Wayanad. This generous contribution was decided at a joint meeting of various labor unions, including AITUC, INTUC, and CITU, who are leading the fundraising efforts.

The funds are being collected from workers employed in Tata Tea, KDHPC, Thalayar, and HML company estates across the Munnar region. As part of the initiative, the companies will transfer one day’s wages from the workers’ accounts to the unions. The Munnar region, home to around fourteen thousand workers across various estates, has rallied together to provide much-needed relief to the disaster-stricken communities. The collective efforts of Harrisons Malayalam Limited and the tea plantation workers in Munnar highlight the strong community spirit and commitment to supporting those in need during times of crisis. The ‘Kaithangu’ initiative and the substantial financial contributions from Munnar workers serve as a beacon of hope for the landslide victims in Wayanad, offering them crucial assistance as they rebuild their lives
